I believe I learnt how to do these in the playground, rather than being taught them in lesson time. But I do remember the early realisation that despite apparently having 4 options to pick from each time there are only two varients, odd or even; and feeling fairly disappointed about the limitations of the whole thing. Though I did try to come up with more unusual categories to mask this.
