Nobody wanted to go hillwalking or climbing with me this weekend, and the forecast looked a bit too grim to go on my own. But I did get an offer to go orienteering down in the Borders. The last time I'd orienteered was at school in the Air Cadets, and it was miserable, but it struck me that it would be sorely needed navigation practice, so I said yes.
The distances involved weren't enough to worry me, but I didn't want to spend the whole afternoon wandering lost around a trackless forest, so I entered the 3.6km Light Green course (other courses went up to just under 10km). I got lost a couple of times (at one point taking 13 minutes to find my way between two stations that were only 300m apart) so I thought I'd end up near the bottom of the category, but as it turned out I came fourth out of sixteen. On a course that was mostly run by women over fifty, but I'll take what I get. Ian also came fourth in his event: he finished thirty seconds after me, but his course was a kilometre longer :-)
I was told off for running in shorts. Apparently thorn bushes can spread hepatitis. To which I privately thought (a) yeah, right (b) those lycra tights people are wearing are thornproof? (c) I think eye-protection would have been more useful in some of the thickets I fought through. But instead of saying these things I politely promised to wear tracksuit trousers next time. And there'll be a next time, I'm sure; it was mostly pretty good fun.
