Thought for a sketch, to be performed near the end of a show:

A guy walks on, looking/acting like a DJ. He walks over to a set of decks at the side of the stage, pulls out some records, inspects a couple, puts one on. Another actor walks on and starts performing part of one of the previous sketches. The DJ shakes his head and takes the record off. The second actor exits quickly. The DJ selects another record and puts it on. I'm sure you see where this is going... actors come on and start performing another sketch. The DJ's digging this, and starts headbanging slightly to a beat only he can hear. He starts scratching the records, with a predictable effect on the actors ("You can't get a colon ZZZRP can't get a colon ZZZRP can't get a WAKAWAKA colon pregnant, darling"). Then the DJ takes out another record, and starts mixing... the dialogue from the two (three? more?) previous sketches is layered together, Arcadia/Play on Words-style, revealing new and unexpected hidden comedic meanings. Or possibly just makes no sense, but in a comedic manner.

[Theatre 2.0?]

Of course, the fun really starts when he takes out the record labelled "DJ sketch"...

Me and [livejournal.com profile] wormwood_pearl, that is. We're going to Prague for eight days, hurrah! As you may already know, I used to live in Prague about seven years ago (hence the username), but I haven't been there since, oooh, 2001 or so, and I'm looking forward to seeing how much it's changed (hopefully the stag-nighters haven't wrecked things too much). Apologies in advance for not checking email much.

In other news, I didn't get a theatre slot for Arcadia. I'd put in the proposal form about a week ago, only to learn that I'd somehow got one with a page missing. The missing page was, of course, the one asking questions about difficult technical bits and copies of the script and, oh yes, MONEY. So I strolled up to the STaG room yesterday at about five o'clock, picked up the missing page, realised that I didn't have the first idea what the budget was, tried to call my Money People, found they weren't answering their phones (in one case, I only found this after following a trail of three "try me on this number..." messages!), and wrote "Er, sorry, I don't actually have a budget..." on the form. I then ran back to my flat, fetched a copy of the script, got back, and discovered that I was expected to hang about in a hot room for over an hour while they called the prospective directors in for interview and discussed their choice.

To my complete lack of surprise, they gave the slot to someone-I've-acted-with-but-don't-know-all-that-well who was wanting to do A Midsummer Night's Dream. In November, which could be interesting... I shall of course audition. Oh yes. I think I'd make a great Bottom. And I'll look around for other theatres in which to perform Arcadia.

Right, now to find somewhere that will sell me Czech crowns at 1710... maybe I should have lingered for less time over breakfast and packing this morning.

The Arcadia read-through went pretty well yesterday. The girl playing Hannah (modern-day female historian, for those of you that know the play) was Slovak, and had a bit of trouble with her words (though she wasn't alone in that - it seemed every couple of minutes I was having to help someone pronounce some unusual word or other). But everyone liked it, and it looks like we'll be putting it on! Probably at the beginning of the Christmas Term, which is a while away, but safely away from all the things I'm currently committed to (juggling conventions, conferences...)

I like Stoppard. It's just so clever. Virtuoso playwrighting. Some wonderful lines, and the play's structure is so elegant. And the ideas he brings in and connects together are, themselves, fascinating.

Now, how much of the swearing should I cut? On the one hand, artistic integrity says I should keep it all in, but on the other, my Mum says she wants to see the show...

... and he's not going to sue me. *relief* :-)

Actually, he wrote me a really nice email, and even said my drawings were excellent. And I was right - the name Edward Monkton is a reference to Munch, and I'm apparently the first one to ask him that.

One thing he asked me to mention (well, sorta):
May I make a further point... when people discover that EM is a pseudonym they get very disappointed. If you are interested enough to share the information above, please bear in mind that my work is no less genuine for being created by someone with a different name. The name, as you now now, is as much a part of the art as... well... the art!

What a thoroughly nice chap. I may have to buy one of his mugs.

In other news, Arcadia read-through tonight... fingers crossed...
